When we run too fat, it becomes quite sensitive to air changes when the air gets better.
We found that when you get close on the tune up--like bottom thread or 3/4 of bottom face on plug-- there was less to gain in the tune up and as a result, less changes in performance with air changes, plus you are safe tune up wise.
Less timing out of the gate so it is less sensitive to track conditions changing.

But we run an altered in a dragster class, so how smart can I possibly be?

    fuel system

You need to have the fuel system close and monitor weather conditions to stay on top of main jet changes.

If you can measure the temperature of something, measure/log it (if you have a data recorder). head/water temp, trans fluid temp, fuel temp, intake temp, egt's, etc. See what it responds to. Keep detailed logs of the weather and track temps. If you don't have a weather station or program to figure grains of water, get one.

Depending on what type of car, if you hit it too lazy off the line, the car may not work properly, resulting in 60' times all over the place.

So there is no one size fits all. You're just going to have to play with trying things to figure out what works best.
