This is from the old Decade of Thrills video from the '80's. It shows a couple of Mike Dunn's old crashes in the Hawaiian Punch FC.

Watch how well the double catch net at the end of the clip works in Columbus.

if I'm not mistaken Doug Kerhulas suffered a closed head injury because of the net at Columbus. He never fully recovered or was able to race again.

    deceleration

Im sure they can design a net with a deceleration system built in. like a cable on a brake at the ends of the net. problem is that at 300mph, you are going to start exceeding human limits to survive. why cant we accept we maybe reaching our limits. going faster and faster is like trying to parachute with a smaller and smaller size chute:eek: sooner or later you hit the ground to hard to survive. :)

Yeah, but what if we had Hans devices back then? Would it have been survivable?

    Kerhulas

That came up in conversation about the nets last night. My dad think it had something to do with one of the net tethers either getting in the cockpit or compromising the cage.

We can speculate all day and all night. Lets just let NHRA and those who are closest to the situation do their jobs. Not one bit of message board bantering is going to bring back those that we have lost.
