Can we run too cold of a plug?

What are the goods and bads of -9, -10 & -11?

The heat range of a spark plug referes to the ability of the center electrode to disapate heat. The reason you need to disapate the correct amount of heat is for a gasoline motor so the plug does not foul. A methanol motor does not foul a plug's center electrode. The only thing we are interested in is if the center electrode gets hot enough to cause pre-ignition so to prevent this we run the coldest plug we can get. To answer your question is No you cannot be too cold with a -11 plug in a methanol motor.

Now I want to throw extended reach into the mix.

Is there any chance that colder plugs or extended reach could change the ideal ignition timing setting?

Do you run -11 in your engines?

I run either -10 or -11 depending on what is available. Advancing ignition can create more heat in the chamber so a colder plug is desired to prevent it getting hot enough to have the plug act like a glo-plug. An extended tip plug is going to heat up more on the center electrode and the ground strap and should not be used.

Do you think that an ignition timing that has been optimized for a -9 would need to be changed (for max power) if going to a -10 or -11?
