    Hi Guys,
    Question:
Is it OK to run gas ported pistons on a blower motor?
    Application: 526 hemi with 14 or 16-71.

    I was told it is a no-no.

    Thanks
    Frank

On my BBC with J&E pistons they are gas ported right above the top ring in the upper ring land, parallel to the ring. Lower half of the hole is gone when they machine the ring groove. Standard top ring, gapless second. Picture the holes 90 degrees from they way your used to seeing them drilled

    Gas Ports

I was told that the piston life will be minimized, eventually collapsing the top ring land.

I guess I should ask, "how many guys running 14-71 hemi's with gas ported pistons and what is the life expectancy"?

    Thanks guys.

    Gas Port

There is no reason to port a 0.17 dykes to ring. That is what you should be running. Also stay away from the Moly top ring. They like to flake. Don

    Gas Ports

That's the thing, the rings aren't dykes. They are a mongral for the gas port piston.
I'm going to change the pistons and ring package to what I normally run (dykes).

I just didn't know if anyone ever tried the gas port route on a hemi and if it worked.

    Thanks

There is no real reason why it wouldn't work, the gas ports are doing the same thing as a dykes, using combustion pressure to expand the ring for a a tighter ring seal, but would have to be an absolute bitch to drill gas ports in a Hemi dome. Sure, any good machinest could do it but probably would be just as cost effective to get dykes ring pistons to start with.

we ran gas ports on our BAE/NRE pro mod hemi with no ill effects,
ERD engines come like this as do Jancen i beleive,
we diddn't have any bad effects just running total seal rings, ring one of the above for a definitive answer
