    Mike;

    I think I'd sooner see them spending their profits by investing in new technologies that reduce or eliminate our dependance on crude oil for fuel.

    If we could step back and just use oil for lubrication, we'd stop making the terrorist sponsoring countries rich enough to sponsor the terrorism we're supposedly fighting.

    If you pay $4.00 a gallon for fuel and get 10 miles per gallon, it cost you $1.00 to drive 2.5 miles. :eek: :mad:

    When we go fight a war in a foreign land and win, We should take over that country, like they did in the old days, Instead we fight, They watch us die, And they reap the benefits. :mad:

    As a former resident of Alaska let me tell you that the .05% of the population that you say opposes the ANWR drilling are definately from there. OPEC funds and in some cases forms the Tree Hugging organizations so that they have enough money and power to keep things like that from happening. You percentages on the price are pretty accurate, however in places like Houston TX where they use oil from the US and places like Alaska where they use ONLY OIL FROM ALASKA the price should be alot lower but because of greed they charge more for their oil just because OPEC has jacked up the price of Saudi oil and therefore greed sets in. This happens all over and its just not right.

    Here is another interesting piece of information. I barrel of crude oil breaks down to set amounts of tar, lubricating oil, kerosene, diesel fuel and gasoline. The way that the crude is heated in the cracking towers allows different products to be taken off at different levels in the tower due to their molecular weight and how far they will rise in the tower. Because of this if you stopped using lubricating oil doesn't mean that you will get more gasoline or diesel fuel. I was shocked when I found this out. It is a fixed ratio.

    Isn't methanol cracked off in the towers too? Somewhere up top?

    According to the internet. When natural gas is mixed with steam and heated to 900°C (about 1650°F) over a catalyst, it is transformed to "synthesis" gas. This gas is pressurized, converted to methanol, and distilled to yield pure methanol.

    Yes, methanol is commonly called wood alcohol but that is not what it is made of today.

    In Germany a 16 year old kid can drink @ (Das Hauf Brau) the beer halls. A liter of the German barley pop @ 16, a kid would get the spins,:confused: but @ 20 or so that same kid could drink 5 liters and never feel it. I know, I speak from trial and error.:D

    Here's some food for thought, if everyone drives a vechicle that gets double the avg. mpg of today, gas will cost double what it is now. Oil companys will want to keep the same profit margins reguardless of how much demand there is. If as a nation we use 1/2 as much fuel in a few years, it will cost twice as much.

    Jody, oil company profits are pretty well a fixed percentage. Read my first reply on percentage breakdown. And their are no Chevy 283 motors with a special carburator that used to get 50 MPG but the oil companies got rid of it (lol):D
