    Hi all,

We run a Big Chief headed motor with a K11 Superman pushing about 50# boost at the traps. We have been running the more expensive NGK race plugs in a 9 heat range. I want to say 5691 plugs but since I'm not looking at them, don't hold me to that.

The real question is these plugs have the 45deg. short ground strap and they work great but they cost around $7 each. Is there any reason we couldn't run a plug with a normal ground strap on it as long as all the other specs are the same? We run straight methanol - no Nitro. It will save us about $4 a plug.

    Any opinions on this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Troy.

Troy the expensive ones are the 6061's. Which plugs depebnds on how much you push the tuneup and car. If you have a good safe tuneup in the car and you are not trying to rotate the world then the NGK R5671a-9 or -10 will work but they are a 5/8 socket. The NGK B9ES or B10ES are 13/16 socket. The one advantage of the longer ground strap is that it shows if you are too lean or have too much ignition faster than the 6061. You can round the corners of the long ground strap and nknow to back off. When you round the ground starp on a 6061 it is probably too late.

One way to know if you are pushing your tuneup and need 6061 or not is by the color of the flat base metal at the end of the threaded part. Are you burning the cadium off or not, or are they medium to dark gray or are they frosty? Are you showing heat down to one thread on your plugs. This is after only one run.

    Hi Mike,

Yeah - we are burning the cad down to the first thread when we get after it a little. Never have gotten to the white frosty look but we don't want to go diving after a run either. Most of the time I look to burn 75% of the cad away (dark grey)and I know I have some leeway.

Now that you mention the stock#6061's - I think that's what they are.

You told me what I wanted to hear.

We are going to an 1/8th mile race on Sep 5th and I'm going to try out the 5671-9 plugs.

BTW - I'm the guy with the tuning program you called a few months ago about my clutch questions if you remember. We are going to try some of your suggestions this race. I'll shoot you an email and let you know how we do.

Thanks again for being there for everybody Mike.

Hope to see you up in Ga in the spring. We may be making a visit to SGMP. BTW - Check out what we have been up to lately with our Open Outlaw series here in Central Fla. http://www.openoutlaw.com

    I tune Matt Gilmore's car.
