small pinion progear limit

We have a 2650lb promod with a screwblown automatic. Will a small pinion gear set live at ?. we'd like to get some hits before we commit to a 10 inch gearset. We have a 5.0 ratio with 1.31 low in the car.

You are past the safe zone with a 28 spline pinion. I had a few guy's ring the small pinion off with cars that were running high sixes at about the same weight. Bad thing is it usually takes out the trans sprag, housing and driveshaft. I wouldn't take the chance.
