I've decided i don't want to mess around with mallory supermag stuff anymore and want to go to a promag. I have an 8amp supermagV now. Just wondering what the best promag would be.
Its on a 540 inch chevy, 14-71 hhr littlefield, 11:1 compression. I built the engine to handle 40psi boost. But will probably run 30psi most of the time.
What amp promag would be the best. I don't want to have to upgrade again.
    20 amp or 44 amp?

    Thanks
    Corey

The Promag 20 will give you plenty of spark. The only thing I don't like about the 20 is that the coil and points box are combined into one box and in the 44 they are separate.

    parts

huge negative on the 12 or 20 is you are on an island for parts. if you get a 44, you will have a much better chance of someone having a part if you need it. I had a TD customer with a 12 at a regional event, had some ignition problems. He was the only one at the track with a 12 and there was 20+ alcohol cars there that could have helped him if he had a 44.

Not to mention a lot more used parts for them on the market.

Will the 20 get the job done? Yes. By the time you buy 2-3 of everything for the 20, you can buy a good used 44.

Like Will said get the 44 amp mag. The fact that is you'll never regret getting the best part for your dollar. And in this case the 44 in the better part.

    20 or 44 Pro-Mag?

Save yourself some hassle and some money in the long run and get the 44 to start with.

Is there much difference in price between the 12, 20 & 44? I didn't think there was which is all the more reason to go straight for the 44.

What are the maintenance differences? For instance, do you need to change the coil wire more often with the 44?

Biggest reason I ask right now is I have come across a couple of 20's for sale used but no 44's at the moment. Just want to make 1 purchase and be done. I'm in no rush, gonna keep my eyes pealed for a 44.

    Thanks

I ran 3 - 20's for several years. The boxes were a continouis issue. I was told it was because the system was a hopped up 12.
If you run the 20's carry 2 extra boxes with you.

Switched to the 44's a few yrs ago, changed rotation my self from hemi to chevy, and took off the Hemi short base, and put on the chevy one piece base. Never have had a problem with any of the 3 - 44's I bought used.

    used mag

If your running a blower, you'll want a points box w/ the rev limiter (p/n 8147), as I think the one in that ad does not (p/n# 8145).
And good used systems, checked my EM / MSD / etc are out there for less than $2600, more like $2300
