Taylor Turns Away All Comers in Woodburn Win

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his crew blasted the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car into the number one qualifying position at Oregon’s Woodburn Dragstrip. Following Friday rains, the first session on Saturday saw Taylor go low for the round with a 5.688-second run at 246.91 mph. Dennis went even quicker in the second and final qualifier, running 5.668 to stay Number 1. Taylor praised Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, for his dogged determination and constant analysis of the tune-up, while searching for the same level of consistency as last season. Dennis noted, “My crew deserves a great deal of credit here. Each time we race, it’s a total team effort and these guys really complement each other in the way they prepare this car. Running Low E.T. in consecutive sessions really put a smile on their faces and I’m proud of them all.”

Sunday’s Eliminations were on again off again, thanks to a persistent mist that caused headaches for track crews as they attempted to keep the surface dry. As a result, Taylor’s First Round win over Forrest LeBlanc didn’t happen until just before 3:00 p.m. Once again, Team Taylor cranked out Low E.T. of the round.

The Semi-Finals found Taylor advancing with a 5.87, though a top-end blower explosion had the car on fire crossing the finish line. Dennis climbed out the roof hatch thinking, “There’s no way we can fix it for the final.” Well, Bernie Harrington and his crew were in the pits waiting to help out, as was Brian Hough and crew. In no time, a new short block was in place, which soon became a complete engine. Taylor was amazed at how smoothly things got done. The new volunteer crew members all followed the Plumbing Concepts car to the starting line to witness the re-match of last year’s Woodburn Final against Bucky Austin.

With all the marbles on the line, Taylor was ready for this latest “Clash of the Titans.” Dennis commented, “Ora sent me to the starting line with a tune-up that he was very confident with. And though my reaction times were good all afternoon, I knew I’d need my best against Bucky.” Taylor did the job, recording a holeshot win (.048 to .121), running 5.720 at 246.37 to Austin’s 5.722. Dennis added, “I’m truly blessed to have friends like these who all pitched in to help get us to the starting line. They’re the greatest. This is the first time I’ve run the table (#1 Qualifier, Low E.T., Event Winner) and it’s sweet revenge after losing to Bucky last year. This puts us back on top of the Division 7 points.”
