Callaway ready to make a move in Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Former NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway is set to make a move in points entering this weekend's Division 2 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Southern Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga. Bolstered by a strong test session at Houston Raceway Park last weekend, Callaway hopes to improve on his last outing where he runner-upped to current leader Steve Torrence in Rusk, Texas. Callaway is currently fourth in Division 4 points.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, had hoped to make the last Division 2 event in Montgomery, Ala., but found a blown head gasket on the team's semi truck when they were ready to leave. Callaway made the decision to sit out the event, instead opting to test at Houston Raceway Park last weekend. The session proved favorable for the team after posting a 5.51 at 258 mph.

"We've learned a lot in the clutch department over the past few races," said Callaway. "We finally got out and tested some things, and it really responded. It was good to get out of a race environment, because it smoked the tires the first run, and if we were racing, we would have went back to our normal set up. We made a few changes, and hopefully we're on to something. A 5.51 isn't nothing to high five about, but considering it was ran in normal bracket race conditions and our best run this year at a national event was a 5.47, hopefully we're moving in the right direction."

Callaway hopes conditions will be similar this weekend in Valdosta.

"We're hoping it's pretty close," stated Callaway. "I hear that's a good track, and we ran about the same time of day we'll be running in Valdosta. Hopefully we can start off in the low .50's and work into the .40's. That's our goal. We really need a win to keep our hat in the Division 4 hunt."

Qualifying will be ran Friday evening with eliminations Saturday afternoon. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
