Weaver reaches second-straight final in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. - Former NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners Racing Team reached their second-straight final in as many races together as a team during this past weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Infineon Raceway. Weaver lost to Mark Woznichak in the final.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., qualified car owner Ron Meer's, Bob DeVour tuned Camaro second with a 5.667 second elapsed time at 255.97 mph in one of the toughest fields of the year. In round one he took out Ron August Jr., with a 5.780 at 251.44 mph, and then defeated Steve Gasparrelli with a 5.698 at 252.10 mph in the semifinals. In the final, Weaver encountered tireshake and slowed to a 5.820 at 247.97 mph, which was not enough for Woznichak's 5.700 at 252.95 mph.

"It was a good weekend, but of course we wish we would have won it," said Weaver. "We learned a lot this weekend. I could have done a better job driving the car, but this is my second time in this car. I just need to spend some more time with this car. We are all looking forward to the next race."

"We had some mechanical issues with some pushrods," added Meer. "But overall, we're happy with the outing. We're never truly happy with a 'second place' finish, but we're making great strides as a team. I think we proved this weekend we can run with anyone in the country, and we're ready to do battle on the national event level."

The team will hit their first national event with Weaver behind the wheel in three weeks at the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals in Seattle. The team competed in Pomona with journeyman driver Kirk Kuhns behind the wheel and again in Las Vegas with three-time Top Fuel Champion Gary Scelzi handling the controls. Weaver, who drove his family-owned Top Alcohol Funny Car since 1983, joined the team last month at the Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Bakersfield, Calif., and won that event.
