Weaver and Meer looking for second straight in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. - Former multi-time NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion John Weaver and car owner Ron Meer will be looking for their second straight win in as many races together during this weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Infineon Raceway. Weaver, driving the Meer Capital Partners backed Camaro, won at the first race he drove the car several weeks ago at the Division 7 event in Bakersfield, Calif., and the team hopes to keep the streak going this weekend.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., who has been driving Funny Cars since the early '80's, hooked up with Meer and veteran tuner Bob DeVour earlier in the year after he had parked his own car. Meer and DeVour started the year with Pro Mod veteran Kirk Kuhns behind the wheel, then put current Nitro Funny Car driver and former three-time Top Fuel World Champion Gary Scelzi behind the wheel in Las Vegas. The team sought to find a permanent driver, and found one in John Weaver.

"They put this car together and it's a good car and a good team," said Weaver. "They got a lot of good things going on, and I'm very fortunate to be driving for them. With our family car, sometimes there just comes a point where the revenue isn't coming in to support a racing operation, so we parked our car. So the opportunity came up to drive for Ron and Bob, so I jumped on it. Bob calls the shots on the tune-up; I just pack the parachutes and try to do my job driving."

DeVour, who has been tuning alcohol cars for a number of years, is excited about having a veteran driver in the seat.

"I've raced against John for a number of years when he had his own car," stated DeVour. "We've had some good drivers drive for us this year in Kirk Kuhns and Gary Scelzi, and John is right in line with those guys. We'll see what the conditions give us when we get to the track, and do our best."

With a permanent driver in place, a strong running race car, and experienced team lead by DeVour, team owner Ron Meer is excited about what the rest of the year may have to offer.

“As a car owner, I could not ask for a better team of veterans to put this car into the winner’s circle for a second straight race," commented Meer. "From Bob’s years of knowledge on how to win races to John’s years of being in the seat of a winning car, to the rest of our veteran guys, we are in a great position to take advantage of our momentum. Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
