    Short Day in Sonoma

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car found consistency during qualifying at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, over the July 4th weekend. With 17 cars battling for a spot in the coveted eight-car field, Taylor was solidly in the 5.7-second range, running 5.76, 5.74, and 5.73 in Saturday’s final session to secure the number five position. Reflecting on the performance, Dennis said, “We’re consistent once again, but not consistently quick. Right now, we’re looking for more performance (e.t.) without going over the edge and overpowering the track.”

The Plumbing Concepts Team was correct to assess this as one of the toughest races of the season. In Sunday’s first round of Eliminations, Dennis drew number four qualifier, Mark Woznichak, and the Rancho Framing entry. Conditions had improved, as the air was better during Sunday’s first round. Dennis spun the tires and pedaled it, but Woznichak was long gone, running a 5.63 to Taylor’s 5.76. Dennis stated, “That run of Mark’s stood for low elapsed time of the event and he went on to win the race. For some reason, it’s a little easier to take when you get bested by the best of the day. Congratulations to Mark on a well deserved win that was way overdue.”

Crew Chief Ora Vasquez commented, “I was pleased to see our consistency return without hurting any parts this weekend. I feel as though we’re headed in the right direction.” At this point in the season, each race carries important points implications. Looking at the big picture, Dennis commented, “We should still be in second place in the Division 7 standings, as I think we added 31 or 32 points to our total. Sure, this was somewhat of a setback, but we’re coming up on five races in seven weeks, so we’ll learn from Sonoma and move forward.”

Before the month of July is out, the Plumbing Concepts Team will have competed in one out-of-Division race and two NHRA national events. And although that kind of schedule is a real test on the equipment and the crew, it also provides a wealth of data, as no car can be successful when it isn’t being raced. Spending most of June in the shop afforded plenty of time for careful preparation, with the intent of running it hard throughout the month of July. Stay tuned as Team Taylor picks up the pace during the summer months.
