    Taylor Reaches Quarter-Finals at Sonoma

ANAHEIM, CA — Much like last weekend’s Seattle soiree, qualifying was a veritable dog fight at Sonoma, California’s Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals. Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car team put a 5.71-second blast on the scoreboards during Friday’s first attempt, which stood for number four. Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, found the Camaro very receptive to his adjustments and improved to a 5.670-second run later that day, landing the team in the number-three position on the ladder. As Dennis noted in his pre-race comments, the speed numbers were decent, as well, with top-end charges of 251.25mph and 251.63, respectively.

Saturday’s last chance to test the track in qualifying was certainly not one for the record books. Taylor’s opponent wasn’t able to engage reverse after his burnout and slowly continued off the end of the track, aborting the run. Meanwhile, Taylor’s Camaro had done a nice burnout and backed up to approach the starting line as usual. Dennis was forced to shut off early in the run, after experiencing a leak in the air bottle that operates the shifter, as he couldn’t engage second gear. As a result, the car slowed to 6.58-seconds. Conditions for the session were good and other competitors advanced up the qualifying ladder, moving Dennis to the number-five position.

Saturday afternoon’s first round of eliminations saw Taylor matched with number-12 qualifier, Sean Bellemeur. The Plumbing Concepts Camaro lost traction smoking the tires hard in the first 300 feet, but Dennis did a masterful job getting it to recover and drove past Bellemeur on the top end, running 5.99 in the process. That set up a quarter-final match-up with the defending Division 7 champ, Doug Gordon, who had lane choice going into the contest. Gordon teased the red light cutting a psychic .005-second reaction time that couldn’t be overcome at the finish line. Taylor and crew were on par performance-wise, running 5.70 versus Gordon’s winning 5.69.

Assessing his performance, Taylor stated, “We came up a bit short today, but my crew came through with another great effort. I’m proud of this whole group. Ora gave me a very consistent car, but we just missed out. What can I say? Doug chopped the tree down, but that’ll just make us more determined next time out.” In his last three events, Taylor has appeared in 9 out of a possible 11 rounds of competition and won 7. Be sure to watch the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals Sportsman show Sunday, August 7, 2005 at 10:00am (PST) on ESPN2.
