Taylor Looks to Repeat 2004 Washington Win

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts-backed NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car team is coming off a hard-fought win less than two weeks ago in Woodburn, Oregon. That momentum gives them even more confidence as they roll into the CarQuest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington, where they scored a victory just one year ago. Granted, there are no guarantees in drag racing, but Dennis and his Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, both have lots of history and success competing in the Pacific Northwest.

Many years ago, Taylor fed his passion for the quarter-mile sport working as a crew member for the Washington-based “Green Elephant” Funny Car, and developed many lasting friendships as a result. Likewise, Vasquez worked with several of the most successful Northwestern race teams, which gives him valuable experience to draw from when it comes time to “read” the track and assess the overall conditions. Dennis commented, “It’s situations like this where Ora’s talent can pay dividends. He’s been working awfully hard lately on some promising tune-up combinations that differ quite a bit from what we’ve been running. It’s plain to see this whole team is proud to work under Ora’s direction. We like our chances here this weekend.”

Taylor has assembled a dedicated crew, all of whom worked doubly hard during their recent win in Oregon. He noted, “These guys were faced with a tough challenge following our fire in the Semi-Finals. We were forced to change the engine and my crew rallied with help from Bernie Harrington (and crew) as well as Brian Hough and his guys. Thankfully, that type of camaraderie is part of drag racing and we were able to make our sponsors proud when the day was done.”

This weekend’s pre-entry list shows 22 top-notch teams ready to battle for a spot in the 16-car field. Three of these are Top 10 cars from the 2004 nationwide points chase and Taylor is the highest finisher in that group, wearing the Number 4 this season. Forecasters are calling for temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s throughout. Qualifying gets underway at 2:00pm and 5:15 on Friday with one more shot at 11:00 am Saturday, followed by Eliminations scheduled for 1:30pm.
