Callaway set for championship showdown once again

NOBLE, Okla. - The setting is a familiar one for former NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champ Lee Callaway. This weekend he will be racing at the Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Valley Raceway Park just outside of Oklahoma City. With the Division 4 Championship is on the line once again, and Callaway hopes to score a win to keep his name in contention as the season winds to a close.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, enters this weekend's event third in Division 4 standings, 81 points behind current leader Steve Torrence and 8 points behind second place Ashley Force. Despite coming off a win in Englishtown, N.J., last weekend, Force is already mathematically out of title contention. The only drivers left with a shot at catching Torrence are Callaway and current fourth place driver Gene Snow, who trails Callaway by a mere seven points.

With three races left to claim on his points for this season, many scenarios still remain, but the common denominators for this weekend are making the final round and keeping Torrence from winning.

"It's going to be tough," said Callaway. "Steve Torrence has been on a tear of late, so stopping them will be a big accomplishment in itself. Gene Snow has ran very well also, so we can't forget about him. We're just going to go out there and try to do the best we can on the run we're on, win the round we're in, and go from there. The only thing we have control over is what we do with our car, so that's all we can focus on. If we do that and win, the points will take care of themselves."

While still determined to fight to the end for the championship, Callaway is pleased to still be in contention given the company he is in.

"To be as high as we are in points with the cars and budgets we're up against means a lot to us," explained Callaway. "We still have a shot at the title, and we probably only have half the budget of the top six teams in the division. Week in and week out, we go against big budget teams like Conway and Torrence, Ashley Force, Aaron Olivarez, Gene Snow and the list goes on. If we can come up with some more sponsor support to go along with the support we get from Tejano Salsa, Pyle Brothers Performance Differentials, Trans Matic, Northwest Performance Machine and InsideTopAlcohol.com, I think we could be a contender on both the divisional and national level."

Qualifying starts at 8 p.m. on Friday and continues on Saturday with two more sessions. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
