Snyder Qualifies #1 Enroute to Runner-Up Finish in Houston

The Snyder Motorsports/TORCO Racing Fuels Top Alcohol Funny Car headed to Houston for the O’Reilly Summer NHRA National event and added to their growing list of accomplishments. Mick Snyder, driver of the Coan converter, Lencodrive-equipped Firebird, became the 72nd person to qualify #1 at a National event in the history of the class by running 5.62 at 255.39 mph. Moreover, it was the first time ever a converter-equipped car was able to accomplish this feat.

Driver, Mick Snyder, and his dad Larry have spent many late nights in the shop critiquing and modifying their original set up with that very goal in mind. This weekend, the two of them were finally able to see all their hard work and sleepless nights pay off. “It is great to come out here and show that we are able to run with the best of the best. There was a really tough field of cars out here this weekend and at the end of qualifying we were at the top of the ladder. Dad and I have been dreaming of this day for a long time now; it was unbelievable to see that dream realized,” Snyder commented.

After qualifying ended, the Team still had a lot of work to do. They took the TORCO Racing Fuels sponsored funny car all the way to the final round before losing by just 3 feet at the stripe. The final round appearance was the 3rd in their last 5 National events for the back-to-back defending Division 3 championship Team.

Saturday night, the Team took the win light with a 5.67 second pass at 253.04 mph and earned lane choice for the second round to be held on Sunday morning. They continued with their success by winning a close second round race running 5.63 at 255.82 mph. With lane choice once again in the semi-finals, the team raced down the quarter mile running a 5.65 at 255.92 mph; the best time of the round for the second straight time. In the finals, Snyder left first and the Team ran another good lap, 5.66 at 254.23 mph, but just missed the winner’s circle by a few feet at the finish line.

“It would have been so nice to take this Firebird wire-to-wire today, but we are happy with the runner-up finish. We ran well all weekend and the final round was no different. We just lost a really close race,” remarked Snyder. “We feel really good about the way we performed this weekend. With such a great group of competitors here, it is difficult to get past first round, much less make it to the finals. Hopefully, we will be able to use some of this momentum and start off well on the divisional circuit next weekend in Indy.”

The next event for the Snyder Motorsports/TORCO Racing Fuel Team will be in Indianapolis next weekend, April 7th thru the 9th. To keep with all the exciting racing action log onto dragracecentral.com.
