    Callaway reaches semifinals in Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - In what may be a turning point of the season for former NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway, a semifinal finish at this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park has bolstered confidence for the team. Callaway qualified third and lost to eventual winner Steve Torrence in the semifinal round.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, qualified his Tejano Salsa/RacecarRigs.com entry third with a 5.547 at 255.29 mph. In round one he defeated Brandon Pierce with an off-pace 5.842 at 220.22 mph when an air line broke to the transmission, keeping Callaway from going into high gear. Luckily, Pierce was further off pace with a 5.94. In his semifinal matchup with Torrence, Callaway fell off his qualifying pace to a 5.609 at 249.90 mph that was not enough for Torrence's 5.558 at 257.04 mph. Despite not winning, Callaway is still pleased due to the fact the team appears to have found the clutch problem that has plagued them for a year in a half.

"It looks like we finally have found the problems in the clutch department," said Callaway. "Now we just have to dial in the tune-up for a clutch that acts right. The car ran really well during the day on a hot track, but when it cooled down for the semifinals, we didn't hop it up enough and it drove through the clutch."

There is no break in the action for the team as they will be back at the track this weekend for the Division 4 Lucas Oil Series event at Cherokee County Motorsports Park just outside of Lufkin, Texas. There Callaway hopes to mount a summertime run to the top of the points standings much like he did in 2002 when he won the Division 4 Championship on a string of three back to back summer victories.

"We're not at the top of the pack right now," commented Callaway. "But we're in striking distance. We were in the same position a couple of years ago when we won the division in 2002 and almost won it in 2003. This car really shines in the hot conditions, and now that we are starting to get a handle on the clutch combination, we hope to make a move this weekend in Rusk."
