Torrence loses close race in round one

JOLIET, Ill. - After posting one of the most impressive rookie debuts in the history of Top Alcohol history, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Steve Torrence failed to reach the final for the first time during this past weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway just south of Chicago. After qualifying the Conway Racing A/Fueler No. 1, Torrence lost to eventual winner David Wells in round one as the pair posted the two quickest runs of the round.

Torrence, from Kilgore, Texas, qualified the Tom Conway tuned machine No. 1 with a low elapsed time of the event 5.394 at 257.43 mph right out of the trailer. In his first round match up with Wells, the pair stayed locked together down the track, but Wells just edged Torrence out with a 5.488 at 260.36 mph to his 5.498 at 256.21 mph.

"I guess this weekend showed Superman isn't bullet proof," said Torrence. "This was such a tough field, there just wasn't any slack runs in the field. He was out in front of me early, but I really was reeling him in on the back half, but it dropped a few cylinders and it was over."

"I'm just ready to get back in the car and get to the next race," Torrence continued. "Even though we lost in the first round, this is one bad hot rod, and I just can't wait to make runs in it. Tom and the crew - Shane Conway, Keith Zimmer and Cody Draper do a heck of a job giving me a good car to drive. We took one on the chin this weekend, but we'll bounce back."

The next outing for the Conway Racing team will be at the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn., August 11-14. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
