Taylor Goes One Up and One Down

ANAHEIM, CA — Joliet Illinois’ Rt. 66 Raceway provided optimum conditions just as competitors expected for the Ameriquest NHRA Nationals. Dennis Taylor came out of the box swinging in Friday’s first qualifying session, recording a fine 5.69 at just under 245mph. With 24 cars making attempts, the Plumbing Concepts Camaro landed in the number eight position and Dennis felt that was a decent way to start things off.

Friday’s second quarter-mile assault gave Taylor and his Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, reason for concern. The car was on another good run, but started skating past half-track. Dennis commented, “It’s become obvious that Ora and I have some issues to address. The car wants to run but at the same time, it has a propensity to lose grip on the top end. During that run, it got way loose upstairs and caused us to slow by a tenth of a second. With the caliber of competition we’re facing here in Joliet, that’s not exactly what we were looking for.”

When the final qualifying session drew near on Saturday, the conditions showed a temperature of 53 degrees, 66-percent humidity, and an adjusted altitude of 239 feet above sea level. Drag racers tend to get greedy with quality numbers like those, but Ora dialed in a nice 5.67 at 250mph to safely secure the number 10 qualifying position. To analyze the outing so far, Dennis added, “Our first and third runs demonstrated consistency, but some of the top qualifiers have a tenth (of a second) on us and we should be right there with them. We’ll need to race smart coming from the bottom half of the field.”

Eliminations got underway early on Sunday as the schedule called for a brisk 9:00am opening volley. Once again, Joliet’s atmospheric conditions were stellar, as the thermometer displayed 66 degrees and the corrected altitude was 685 feet above sea level. Taylor drew recent U.S. Nationals runner-up, John Weaver, in the Meer Capital Partners Camaro. Dennis had a slight starting-line advantage and lead from stripe to stripe, as Weaver shook hard, pedaled it and never found traction. What’s unfortunate for Dennis, his first-round victory set up a quarter-final match-up with recent U.S. Nationals winner, Frank Manzo, who followed his holeshot all the way to the win light as Taylor trailed.
