    Taylor Victim of Treacherous Track

ANAHEIM, CA — Top Gun Raceway provided plenty of headaches for the Top Alcohol tuners this weekend. Though temperatures were favorable and humidity low, the corrected altitude and treacherous track confounded some of the best tuning minds in the business. Friday’s first qualifying session saw Dennis Taylor tip-toe to the number one position, running 6.45 at only 227mph. The other 10 cars suffered either tire shake or a total lack of traction. Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, dialed the car to leave the starting line very soft and applied a bit more power once the Plumbing Concepts Camaro hit second gear.

When Dennis squeezed the trigger during Saturday’s second qualifier, Ora gave him another smart tune-up with yet more power built in. This time, a few of their rivals began to figure things out, as well, though Taylor’s conservative 6.34-second run landed the team in the fourth spot. As Dennis predicted before this event, the corrected altitude figures were 6,800 feet (and higher) above sea level.

Saturday’s final qualifying session saw Dennis improving by better than a tenth of a second, as his Plumbing Concepts Camaro ran 6.229 at 230.21mph to secure the fifth spot on Sunday’s Eliminations ladder. Team Taylor served notice during qualifying, however, as they were the only crew to master the delicate balance of power (and how to apply it) during each and every run, regardless of which lane they were assigned. Unfortunately, Taylor gave up lane choice by merely .005 to Doug Gordon’s number four car.

Besides the nasty altitude, there was a severe oildown in the left lane during round one of Top Alcohol Dragster. Following a lengthy cleanup the track was deemed race ready. Taylor and Gordon were scheduled to be the fourth pair of Alcohol Funny Cars to run, but somebody decided they’d be the first — right after the final pair of dragsters. He left first in the bad lane, but Taylor had to “pedal” the car three times to avoid losing control, and Gordon slipped past at the stripe.

Dennis stated, “We got robbed by having no air and no track. We had to take all the power out of the car. It was ‘scary bad’ out there and we’re fortunate to be taking our car home in one piece.”

Next, the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car heads to the fabled Texas Motorplex, known as the sport’s first “Super Track,” for the O’Reilly Fall Nationals, where their fortunes are bound to turn around.
