Taylor’s Try Turns Terrible in Texas

ANAHEIM, CA — Ennis, Texas, and the fabled Texas Motorplex was not exactly kind to Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts Camaro crew this weekend. The O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals proved to be too tough to tame, as they just couldn’t get a handle on the tune-up combination. Friday’s first qualifying session found superior atmospheric conditions, as the air temperature was a cool 57 degrees and the corrected altitude was 839 feet above sea level, offering plenty of air for the engine to ingest. The track temperature stood at 76 degrees and when Dennis launched off the starting line, the car went into violent tire shake and coasted to a 9.00-second timeslip. Believe it or not, Taylor was in the show, despite the uncharacteristic performance.

A scary on-track incident between two Pro Stock racers caused a long delay, which ultimately forced the cancellation of qualifying session number two for the Top Alcohol cars. Without any usable data from session one, that meant the second (and final) qualifying attempt on Saturday would be labeled “do or die.” That puts Dennis and his Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, in a precarious position. Take too much power away from the car and it’ll shake the tires again, put too much power in and it goes up in smoke. It boils down to a balancing act, which demonstrates the extreme difficulty in tuning these powerful Funny Cars. Three qualifying attempts are often not enough when things don’t go according to plan, but having only two is a severe handicap.

Saturday’s final qualifying session showed some signs of promise, as the scoreboards in Taylor’s lane displayed a 5.94-second run at 245mph. Not stellar, but good enough for the number 12 position. Please refer back to the aforementioned balancing act. Anything can happen if you’re in the field.

Round one of Final Eliminations also commenced on Saturday with Dennis facing number-five qualifier, Kebin Kinsley. Taylor did his job on the starting line leaving first with six-hundredths of a second advantage. It proved all for naught as the Plumbing Concepts Camaro struck the tires and immediately went up in smoke. Dennis commented, “This thing smoked the tires so hard I thought it was my old Top Fuel Dragster. We never did get a handle on what the car wanted here in Texas, but this is just a minor setback and we won’t get down over it. We’ll test before our next outing and more than likely, everything will be back to normal. These cars just throw you a curveball sometimes.”
