Taylor Reacts First, Just Misses Quarter-Final Win

ANAHEIM, CA — The Plumbing Concepts team was challenged at every turn during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Minnesota’s scenic Brainerd International Raceway. The entry list was more like a Who’s Who list for the Top Alcohol Funny Car contingent, with 8 of the Top-10 cars from 2004 on hand. Friday qualifying featured a clean out-of-the-trailer pass with Dennis ending up in the eighth position posting a 5.86-second run. The afternoon session saw the car respond to the adjustments from tuner, Ora Vasquez, as the scoreboards lit up displaying a fine 5.76, good enough for the number seven spot.

Taylor’s fellow national combatants were also making the right adjustments and moved ahead on the ladder. In the final attempt, Dennis drove through tire shake, but improved to a 5.72 at 251.30mph, which landed him number nine – a mere .002-second from the top half of the field. As a result, the Plumbing Concepts Camaro would lose lane choice for the first round on Saturday afternoon.

Round One of Final Eliminations found Bruce Carlson in the next lane, and Dennis used a great reaction time (.051) running 5.73 for the holeshot win. The margin of victory was approximately 10 feet at the finish line stripe. With no “easy side of the ladder,” number-one qualifier Bob Newberry also advanced and both Valvoline supporters readied for Sunday’s head to head match-up.

The Plumbing Concepts Camaro proudly wears the Number 4 this season, which designates its 2004 national points finish, while Quarter-Final opponent, Newberry, displays the Number 5. Conditions were favorable with 75-degree air temperature and the track surface came in at 104. Though relegated to the right lane, Taylor was on his game with a starting line advantage that kept him in the lead until half-track, but Newberry prevailed at the finish. Three of the four cars advancing did so from the left lane, however. Taylor’s reaction times were among the best in Top Alcohol Funny Car of the first two rounds. Besides Dennis, other Top-10 cars that came up short in the Quarter-Finals included defending champ, Cy Chesterman, eight-time champ, Frank Manzo, and Jay Payne.
