Parts failure leads to early exit for Weaver

POMONA, Calif. - Despite coming into this past weekend's CARQUEST Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif., with high hopes, John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners Top Alcohol Funny Car team just couldn't get any cooperation from the proverbial 'Lady Luck.' After fighting a variety of issues in qualifying, parts failure ultimately lead to Weaver's first round loss.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., qualified the Bob DeVour tuned machine 12th in the field with a 5.760 second elapsed time at 250.37 mph. In round one, Weaver squared off against Pete Swayne, but came up short when a valve failed, resulting in a supercharger backfire.

"It just wasn't a good weekend for us," said Weaver. "We just couldn't get the ball to roll our way. We'll put it behind us, learn from it, and move on to our next race in Phoenix."

"We fought problems all weekend," added DeVour. "We had some electrical problems during qualifying. We never got to make a good run. It was on a better run than our .76 in qualifying in the first round, so it's hard to say what it would have ran, but we would have had a shot at winning the round. As a team we'll bounce back and rise to the occasion at the next race."

Despite falling short of their goals, team owner Ron Meer is pleased with his team's work this past weekend.

"I'm real proud of my guys," stated Meer. "They were faced with some tough situations throughout the weekend, but never faltered. You're going to have races like this past weekend from time to time. You certainly try to minimize their occurrences, but you take what you can from it, try to improve and move on the next race. We'll be back out in Phoenix ready to get back to the level we strive for."

The next event for the Meer Capital Partners team is the Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Firebird Raceway just outside of Phoenix, Ariz., Mar. 3-5.
