Hey Dan, it's the old BOHICA treatment. It's jacked up because the black stuff is different and cool so they charge more. The cheapest way I've found is to buy the generator from whatever source is the cheapest and buy the big cap conversion kit from Summit and just replace the smaller stuff. As far as the used stuff, if it hasn't been run over by a Caterpillar, Leahy, BR Motorsports or MSD can repair a 44. It's just a trade off on what needs to be fixed to is it worth it. My recommendation is if you buy used, have the seller send it to Leahy first to get it tested and then make your decision after that. That will give you peace of mind that it is all okay and the testing is pretty cheap insurance.

X2. Lahey is the best around in the central states area. Quick turn around and they can test every piece of your ignition. The larger cap is great if you have to pull a lot of timing for some reason like 17 degrees or more . I'm pretty sure that small cap will crossfire around there . Buy used , you get an accurate amp reading , rotor and cap will be phased in. Just make life easier. Plus he sells used coils for cheap , inspected and ready to race
