i have posted this on msd tech site aswell

hi guy,s i am having a few dramas timing my blown sbc
i run the above control box and mag (front drive)
my 8106 box is close to the mag on the engine plate all grounded as per instructions
my 8973 is on the chassis rail in front of the engine plate
retards are not activated ( dark brown, tan ,pink ) are looped and shielded
    away from any power source
start retard is at zero along with all the other retards
i set the timing at 34 degrees spininning the motor over with the mag on but no fuel in the injection
once i start the engine it drops back to 24 to 26 degree's and stays there
it doesnt change through the rev range???????
is the 8973 to close to the 20 amp mag , is it picking up interference somehow
    any help would be great
    thanks geoff 3479

    timing

i'm a little confused on your procedure but it doesnt really matter. If you think there is an interference issue disconnect the 8973 and fire the car on the mag only.
The 8973 has some retard in it automatically. I can't remember how much. I set my stuff around TDC mechanically and fire the car. Then I adjust the timing with the 8973 up and running.
They do recommend a crank trigger with the 8973. The crank tigger also has to be advanced from it's mechanical position to get the timing correct.
The best way to fine tune is to put 5 degrees or so extra in the mag and then power step 1 retard in the 8973 all the time. Adjust step 1 to the value you need with the laptop instead of moving the mag or crank trigger.

Hi Geoff, so you are expecting some retard because you have programmed it into the 8973. Where is this retard in the 8973, is it in the Launch Retard Curve or in the Run Retard Curve or where? Also where do you have the "BLUE" wire that runs into the 8973? Is that hooked up to a clutch switch or to a transbrake button or where? Have you connected a laptop to the 8973 while it is running and watched the retard dials in the lower left corner of the screen and the "MONITOR" in the upper left corner of the screen to see what is being activated?
