Weaver and MCP team looking forward to season opener

POMONA, Calif. - One day before the NHRA season opens at this weekend's CARQUEST Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif., every competitor in Top Alcohol Funny Car is tied for first place. When qualifying begin on Thursday, John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners team hope to keep that position.

The MCP Racing team, which consists of former Div. 7 Champion John Weaver as driver, veteran wrench Bob DeVour as Crew Chief and team owner Ron Meer, will be entering their second season together. After starting last season with drivers Kirk Kuhns and a one-race stint with defending POWERade Funny Car World Champ Gary Scelzi behind the wheel, the team found Weaver as their permanent driver. The team wasted no time coming together, winning their first Div. 7 event in Bakersfield, Calif. The team then went on to runner-up at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals later in the year. With last season under their belt and a solid test session last weekend in Vegas, the team is eager to hit the track this weekend.

"I'm real excited about getting the season started," said Weaver. "Bob [DeVour] made some changes over the winter and we're all real excited to see how the car will do."

"We found a few problems that kept us from running as quick as we wanted to last weekend," cited DeVour. "But that's why you test before the first race. We made a few changes over the offseason, and we'll see how they do this weekend. We're just looking to go have some fun."

After success last year, Meer is ready to get the season started as well.

"We really came together as a team last year, and we're optimistic about this year," stated Meer. "We're really looking forward to making a full account of ourselves against some of the best teams in the business this weekend. It's a real dogfight out here. Plus, this is our home race, so we're all real excited."
