Weaver set to close season strong in Pomona

POMONA, Calif. - Coming off the heels of arguably the toughest Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event on the tour in Las Vegas, John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car team head into another tough event, the season-closing AAA Auto Club Finals at the famed Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif. After qualifying for the tough field last weekend, the team has their sights set on the winner's circle at their home track.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., cites last weekend's event should be a springboard into this weekend's race.

"Last weekend was just about as tough as it gets," said Weaver. "There were a lot of tough cars, so to qualify was something. We obviously would have liked to have made it past the first round, but we were just on the wrong end of a close race."

Team Crew Chief Bob DeVour feels the more runs the team gets down the track, the closer they will come to achieving their goals of being at the top of the class.

"This is still a relatively new team," said DeVour. "I think we're a good team, but to be a great team, it's just going to take runs down the track. Bob Newberry and Frank Manzo, those are great teams. Their teams have been together for years, and they probably make 100 runs a year. We're going to get there, but it's just going to take runs and time. I'm still learning John, and he's still learning this car. I can tell you one thing, John can certainly rise to the occasion. When he has to be good on the tree, he is, and when he really needs to drive the car right he does. That .009 light he had in the first round was a prime example. Unfortunately, I didn't have the car running as good as I would have liked, and we came up short. Like I said, I just need more runs to get it to that level. Hopefully we get there this weekend."

Team owner Ron Meer is excited to compete at the team's home track.

"This is our home event," stated Meer. "Not only is it in our backyard, but it's a track that is rich in history. A win here this weekend would be really special."

Qualifying begins on Thursday for the alcohol cars, and concludes on Friday. Eliminations will begin on Saturday with round one, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
