Weaver looking to carry the 'Big Mo' into Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Former NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champ John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners team will be looking to carry the 'Big Mo' into this weekend's SummitRacing.com Nationals at "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Weaver and the team hope to stay hot after two-straight final round appearances on the Lucas Oil divisional trail.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., is looking forward to racing at the national level after two strong divisional outings.

"We're all really excited," said Weaver. "The car has been running really well, and we hope to make it run even better this weekend. When the car is running like that, you just can't wait to get back into the car. Hopefully we'll do good. After having the reverse handle break in the finals at our last race, you want to be able to make up for that with a good showing. You want to do good and show that even when bad things happen, you can bounce right back."

Despite the strong showings on the divisional level, veteran tuner Bob DeVour has a cautious enthusiasm going into this weekend. With "The Strip" being known for it's excellent traction, DeVour cites the track may be so good it creates it creates new problems.

"When you have a track with the traction Vegas usually has, it all comes down to power," DeVour explained. "You just have to see what kind of power you can make when you get there. Sometimes you can finesse a car down a marginal racetrack and go really fast. But when a track hooks, that's when the cars with big horsepower run well. We'll just have to see what happens. There will be a lot of good cars there, and we'll just do the best we can. The car is running good and not hurting any parts; John's doing a good job driving the car, so we're looking forward to the challenge."

Team owner Ron Meer cites the challenge of a big event like this weekend's is a motivator for his team.

"Going up against the best on one of the best, if not the best facilities we run at is what it's all about," stated Meer. "We really get up for the challenge of running the best cars in the country. It is very rewarding when you do well in those circumstances. We have some momentum coming into this weekend, so hopefully we can keep that going in Vegas on the national level as well."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions. One final session will wrap up qualifying Saturday morning, with round one of eliminations that afternoon. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
