Whiteley looking to finish strong in Vegas

LAS VEGAS – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Jim Whiteley and his YNot Racing team will be looking to clinch a second-place national finish during this weekend’s Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Whiteley, who already has the Division 7 Championship clinched, can lock the No. 2 national spot up by reaching the final round.

Whiteley, from Grand Junction, Colo., has been locked in a season-long battle with defending two-time World Champion Bill Reichert for the Championship. Reichert clinched his third-straight Championship with a win two weeks ago in Reynolds, Ga. Despite not winning the Championship, Whiteley is looking forward to racing with a little less pressure than the past few events have been.

“We’re going to go try to have some fun in Vegas,” said Whiteley. “We’re going to try a few new things. We still need to try to do well to make sure that [Marty] Thacker can’t catch us for second-place. We need to stay on top of that, but it will be nice to not have the pressure we’ve had lately.”

“I also have to tip my hat to Bill Reichert and his team for another Championship,” Whiteley added. “That’s a class operation and they deserve it. It was a heck of a battle.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one session, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
