    Treacherous Track Turns Taylor Back

ANAHEIM, CA — Having tested their new 2006 power combination last Thursday, Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts crew seemed to be heading in the right direction. New parts and pieces isn’t their only foe this year, as an increase in power has caused either too much tire spin, or dreaded tire shake.

Conditions in Tucson were warm and dry, as Sunday’s first round saw the most humidity of the weekend – a mere five percent. However, the corrected altitude ranged from Saturday’s low of 5,100 feet to 5,412 feet, recorded Friday. Naturally, the higher the corrected altitude, the less air there is for race cars to breathe in. Taylor’s first two qualifying runs netted acceptable, though not stellar results – with Friday’s 5.95/242mph charge followed by Saturday’s 5.99. The team’s final attempt ended abruptly with violent tire shake, aborting the run.

Dennis noted, “Like any other race weekend, we faced one challenge after another. Fighting a lack of air is never easy, but when the track is marginal, that just compounds things. It’s a shame we have to run cars this fast on such a poor racing surface. Here, if you don’t have lane choice, you might as well put it in the trailer.” Taylor finished in the number 5 qualifying position out of 8, setting up a first-round match with the defending Division 7 champion, Steve Gasparrelli.

Sunday’s first pair resulted in a horrific oildown in the left lane. Following a two-hour clean-up, the three remaining opponents relegated to the left lane were all defeated, and Dennis Taylor was the last of those three. Taylor added, “Bad tracks can rob championship points just like a broken motor can.” However, the Plumbing Concepts team looks forward to next week’s race in Houston. They can’t wait to run on a top-quality, national-event track, where virtually every driver has an equal chance to win, regardless of lane choice, or lack thereof.
