Taylor Comes Up Short in Photo Finish

ANAHEIM, CA —Dennis Taylor rolled through the gates of Auto Club Raceway at Pomona with just a handful of test runs on a whole new power combination. Nonetheless, qualifying for the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals went well, as Thursday’s first session saw the scoreboards light up displaying a 5.88-second run at 248.43mph. Things picked up a bit on Friday, as the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car clicked off a better 5.732 at 252.28. One more shot in the afternoon heat saw the numbers drop to 5.81, though “big speed” was back, as Dennis tripped the speed clocks at 252.38mph. Just missing the top half of the 16-car field, Taylor landed 9th, setting up a first-round match-up with Division-7 rival, Doug Gordon.

Dennis found himself on the receiving end of a “holeshot,” as his great .034 reaction time was overshadowed by Gordon’s stellar .003. However, the numbers at the big end were extremely close, with Taylor’s 5.71 coming up a bit short of Gordon’s 5.67. The margin of difference was approximately .007-second.

Taylor noted, “Gordon and I usually go up against each other in the later rounds, but that’s not how things ended up this time. There’s a lot more power left in this new combination and I know we’ll sort if out with more time to learn what it needs.”

For some unknown reason, Gordon always digs a little bit deeper when running Dennis Taylor or Steve Gasparrelli, and that extra determination showed itself at the 46th Annual Winternationals. Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez added, Our speed numbers are indicative of what this motor will run, but speed doesn’t win races, so we’ll have to pick away at our elapsed times in order to be where we need to be.” More testing is sure to help Taylor and Vasquez unleash the power.
