    Taylor Turns in Terrific Try

ANAHEIM, CA — After performing like a Swiss watch in qualifying, Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Camaro was operating at its pinnacle. Thursday’s out-of-the-box effort was good enough for the number-one position at 5.655-seconds at 252.57mph. Speaking of his Crew Chief, Dennis mentioned, “Ora Vasquez applied some new tuning theories to this thing and the result was big speed.” Both men were more than pleased after running over 250.

Friday’s final two sessions would prove critical since 29 Top Alcohol Funny Cars converged on Pomona’s fabled concrete and asphalt racing surface. Conditions were very similar to the previous day, as temps hovered in the high 60s and the altitude was slightly better at 1,234 feet above sea level. Taylor cranked out another 5.65 at 252.28 as a few other cars improved, bumping them to fourth.

The final qualifier saw the stylish blue Camaro trip the timers at yet another 5.65 with even more speed, as the scoreboards displayed a top-end charge of 256.06. The last two qualifying runs saw this race car run back-to-back 5.650-second elapsed times. Not only did the car perform admirably, but so did the entire crew. When the dust had settled, all was good and Taylor landed in the fifth qualifying position, while 13 other racers failed to make the field.

Round 1 of Eliminations commenced late Saturday afternoon and the only thing left was bragging rights for who would win the final contest of the 2005 season. Lined up against number 12 qualifier, Hank Coolidge, Dennis had a great .050 reaction time as Hank lit the red light while attempting a starting line advantage. That miscue proved fortunate for Taylor, as his car went up in a cloud of tire smoke and coasted across the finish line.

Round 2 on Sunday saw Dennis matched up with newly crowned Pacific Division 7 Champion, Steve Gasparrelli. Taylor noted, “We went to the starting line with our most aggressive tune-up of the season and figured there was a very good chance the track would hold it. As it turned out, career-best numbers may not have gotten us past Steve. He cranked out Low E.T. and Top Speed of the Meet running 5.59 at 260 while we shook hard at the hit of the throttle. Gasparrelli was the class of the field today scoring an impressive win, but our hats are off to David Ray who came all the way from Plaistow, New Hampshire, and darn near won the whole thing.” Taylor finished sixth in the national points standings.
