    Taylor Better In Baytown

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his and his entire Plumbing Concepts crew was eager to compete in the O’Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. They were also ready to turn the performance corner, as the mysteries of their new ‘06 engine combination were beginning to disappear. This season has been loaded with promise and an equal amount of head scratching.

Friday’s qualifying conditions showed 74 degrees, 88-percent humidity, 951 feet (above sea level) adjusted altitude, and a track temperature of 92 degrees – not bad for starters. Driving through some tire shake, Dennis lit the boards with a safe 5.81-second run at 240.47mph for the provisional number eight position. The second session found virtually the same atmospheric conditions, and Taylor ripped a 5.81/250mph pass securing the number 11 spot.

Saturday’s air temperature was a bit cooler at 72 degrees, though stickier, with higher humidity than the day before and a more favorable corrected altitude. Dennis put the car on the starting line and hammered out a nice 5.74 slowing to 223mph with some engine problems. Taylor ended qualifying with consistency, though he’s searching for “conquickstency,” settling for the 11th spot -- not great, but a step in the right direction. Dennis noted, “We stepped on it that time, and found out how far is too far. It was wounded a little, but my guys did a super job getting it race ready again.” The First Round of Eliminations rolled out at 6:30pm.

Back at the starting line, Dennis fought to keep the car from creeping through the lights, and as a result, his reaction time was off. He added, “Hey, it wasn’t our day, but fortunes have been known to change in Las Vegas. I can’t wait to run there next week, and my guys like the track, too. We’re almost out of the woods, and our combination is responding to treatment.”
