Annie Whiteley looking to maintain points lead in Tulsa

Annie Pomona Burn.jpg TULSA, Okla. – For rookie NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Annie Whiteley, the primary goal for this season has always been to get seat time and experience. As the round wins keep coming, she’s also getting valuable experience battling for a championship. She currently leads Western Region points standings, and will be hoping to build on that lead during this weekend’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Central Regional at Tulsa Raceway Park.

Whiteley, from Grand Junction, Colo., scored a semifinal finish in her YNot Racing Mustang during last weekend’s regional event in Denver, resetting the track record elapsed time in the process.

“We had a pretty good race last weekend,” said Whiteley. “We were all pretty excited about running the .74 for the track record. We hurt a piston the run before and the guys really busted their tails to get the car put back together in time. It was a very smooth run. I was just hoping it would make it down the track without hurting anything. We ended up losing in the semifinals, but it was still a good weekend for us.”

This weekend’s event will be the first night race for Whiteley in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class.

“This will be my first night race in the Funny Car,” commented Whiteley. “I think the boys are more excited about it than I am. I know they have good lighting there in Tulsa, so it shouldn’t be a problem. It will just be another new experience.”

Qualifying for the event will be on Friday with two sessions, and final eliminations will conclude the event Saturday evening.
