Cylinder Head Temps?

    I Have Put A Cylinder Head Temperture Gauge On The Car. It's A Solid Block With Solid Heads On Alky What Range Should The Head Temps Run? Thanks

    Once or twice, I checked head temps on our warm up, on alky
    JUST PRIOR TO SWITCHING TO NITRO...
    with a hand held thermo gun,
    it was reading 100 to 106 (external temp)
    then on the cackle, 118-124 after the tug.

    ANY body else have any readings for this question.

    I found that if you use a thermo gun directly on an aluminum head or block one gets a false low reading. If you paint a small flat black circle about the size of a quarter on the head or the block and take the temp of that black circle you will get a much higher more realistic reading. I would be interested if anyone else has experienced this.

    so would this also be true at the starting line...
    its hotter than what the temp gage is reading,.. off of
    the flat black rubber surface..????? hmmmm

    No, flat black or dark surface reads the correct temps. It is the aluminum surfaces or shiney surfaces that can read incorrectly.

    I"m Running A Gauge That Has A Sending Unit That Is Screwed Into The Back Of The Head So Would That Be Different Than The Black Spot Thanks

    Are you running water in the heads? if not I don't think the sending unit will read air temp. inside the head??

    I would think the gauge and the temp gun should read the same temp in the same area.

    I try and heat the motor up to a thermo gun reading on the front of the head to about 130* because after I shut it off it tends to heat soak and the temp climbs for a while. The best temp for the oil is around 160* on warmup. I believe the best temp to have after the burnout prior to launch is probably somewhere between 170-180* to make the most power. This will probably give you around a 210-220* at the end of the run.

    actually the gauge he his talking about is the type i used for years. it is an electrical gauge that has a small sending unit that you mount to the head. you have to drill a hole aproximatly .750 inch deep and thread with an 1/8 inch pipe tap. i used the gauge religiously to warm the car and for a certain temp that i always wanted the heads when i pre- staged . i looked at it as one varyable to eliminate. seemed to work for me. but as usual everyone has different ideas. just don't ask me what temps i ran. you can't afford that info jamie.

    we used to run a head temp gage. the temp at stage was usually 185-200 and would acutally go down in high gear, then go up at the turnoff due to heat soak. we don't even use it anymore.
