I'd like to ask a question, but some background is necessary first........

Let's assume that a person has a set of old dual plug nitro heads, and plans to recycle them in an environment of very high boost & methanol. Outlaw. Let's also assume that the rules allow for this, and that the extra weight and $$ are not an issue. Let's also assume that the mag of choice is the MSD 44.

Would there be any measurable performance advantage by actually having two mags and two lit spark plugs per chamber, with just methanol? Or, just make some filler plugs for the second hole?

    Thanks.

call wizards warehouse and buy a set of block off plugs. you don't need 2 plugs with alky and a msd 44.

    more than likely not

while i can't say this definitively, i would have to say your best bet is to stay with one mag. i know that dual 44's have been tried on several occasions by top running teams, and they didn't stick with them.

the main thing you have to overcome is that a mag set up weighs aroudn 25 lbs, and another mag will take about 30 hp to drive. so you would have to find 50 or more hp to make up for it.

methanol seems to be just happy with one plug.

    Mag Drive HP

It does not take anywhere near 30hp to drive an MSD 44amp generator. The test bench used by MSD to spin up their mags only has a 2hp motor drive and can spin the generators up to 12000rpm. The magneto generates the equivalent of .089 hp electrical power at 8000 engine rpm, even at 5 percent efficiency the draw would be less than 2hp. Also the gear used to drive the mag or mags would not last a second driving 30 or 60hp.

    i stand corrected

i have always been told a mag takes that kind of hp to drive....

still you will more than likely not see enough gain to justify the extra weight expense and extra chance to have ignition problems.

I know one good thing about the 44. With accessorys you can play with the timing as the car goes down the track. Im not sure if its legal in the class or not but a guy in my class has to take his MSD off because of our 60-1320 rule. This system works well but is very expencive. In alky I also beleve that a second ignition is only a back up ignition. Whenever I get a sponsor in the future I will be running the MSD product because they are ahead of time right now. Just my 02 cents

P.S. Over hear on the west coast I have only seen 1 mag on nitro coupes.
