We're ready to dyno our 540 KB Olds. It's a high helix motor designed by Oddy.Should make over 2000hp. We have access to a state of the art DTS dyno but we don't have any experience running an engine like this on the dyno. We have a good baseline tuneup to start with and a selection of pulleys to get the boost we need. Any advice ? thanks

Remember that your on track tune up will be around 1/2 gal. richer due to more air through blower. A motor with a high percentage of fuel through the hat will also be leaner on the track due do the slower movement of seperated fuel at high rates of acceleration. A place you might learn something is by "mapping" your timing. Make 3 pulls at different timing, then overlay them on the computer. Do the same thing on fuel, we have probably gained the most useful info from this.

Watch your oil temperature on the dyno as it will get pretty warm quickly. Keep your blower lubed up as you can easily make 15-20 pulls in a couple of days and will start losing boost. If you can put temp probes in a couple of places inside the manifold, it sometimes shows you something. Have someone ready to hit the kill button immediately in case something goes wrong, use blower retraint, etc.

Always heat soak engine before first run of the day. Warm it up lean, then let it sit about 1/2 hour. Very important, if changing oil between pulls to heat the oil. It's not like at the track where you fire it up, idle, burnout, idle etc. If you don't do this, refer back to, "have someone ready to hit the kill button"

    Enjoy

Had my blown gas motor (1900hp) on the dyno last May. I'd keep the RPM limited to around 6K until you really get confortable control of the throttle. It'll feel like it wants to get away from you on RPM's. It's really nerve racking having that much power stationary. Like previous post, the tuneup will be different on the track, but it gives a good starting point. The fuel curves and timing curves would have taken me a long time at the track to learn what we did in a short time on the dyno.
    Good luck and have enjoy.......

Thats one mean gas burner! I cringe thinking how small the tuneup window is on something like that. Thanks for the help guys..Mike
