How cold can it be to race ?

    We were supposed to do a deal this weekend but highs will be mid 50's at best, maybe a little less than that. Besides the obvious traction issues any thoughts on how hard it will be on our fresh KB Olds? I just got to thinking about cold rods, thick oil & all that & thought the more experienced racers on here might have an idea about this. Thank you, Dale

    You can get a oil pan heater pad from moroso, to preheat the motor oil before warm up.. I dont know how hot you guys preheat but I like to get the heads over 170 before I shut it off then let it heat soak.. It will be fine.

    Same here. Pre-heat oil for a 1/2 hour or so if possible. Let heads get to 210 on warm-up/run-in and let it heat soak. Have run in low 30 degree temps with no issues doing this. Definitely start with gas or a mixture of gas and alky.

    Old School, before electric pan heaters. Hell, you were lucky to have water in the pits let alone electricity. We would slide 2 or 3 cans of STERNO under the pan till it got hot enough to burn your hand. Bet it would still work today.:)

    a couple of halogen lights shining up towards pan is what we did before we got a plug in pan heater

    In the 50 deg range is mighty cold and hard on parts and the track would more and likly not be very good..butttttt if I was you lurch I would go it will be a blast and you should have the baddest car there:) I think howard is going we ate together on friday and he and brant was going frank from tulsa is down he rolled in today around noon..go have fun...going to be a longgggg winter:mad::mad:..Dave Lowe
    p.s. I still lookin for a deal on rotors!! if you wanna sell it I have a guy that might take it, its for a street rod deal and I could just pull all the strips out for him and it would work great..see ya

    Several years ago we tested a new t/d for mike spitzer at the halloween classic at norwalk...mike was there to help and watch..19 degrees,yes,19 degrees..we ran the quickest fastest time for a t/d (at that time) and had a .937 60 ft.....we told mike to dress warm,but did'nt and froze ..
    Yes, the cold is hard on your parts if not pre-heated...
    Don't let a little cold weather stop a die-hard racer !!! I also went to the same race another year with 2" of snow on the ground thursday of that week...if you never raced at norwalk you don't know what starting line bite is....

    You shoul not use 70 wt oil in those temps. Either a 50 wt or 60 wt or mix the 70 and 50 one to one for a 60 wt oil.

    Would your recommendation change if you ran 70 wt and preheated to 150F in normal weather, than also do that for the cold weather?
