Fuel Shutoff Lock

Do most of you all run some kind of lock on your fuel shutoff handle to ensure it won't start to close on a run? I haven't personally seen anyone run one, but can see a lot of money being spent if the cable was to vibrate towards closing.

 

I don't recall who it was, but I remember seeing a really trick little bracket and spring that kept this from happening. It mounted to the 3-way, and the spring kept tension on the arm in the closed/open position.

 

What no duct tape ????

Do the traditional 1/8 inch strip of duct tape around
the shut off arm that loops around the outlet fitting of the
top of the pump, just dont loop it more than once.
you can do it in the lanes before you run.

 

Oh dear Lord... Please, he didn't just suggest duct tape.

I wonder if I could make a Hans from duct tape. Couple times around the body under the arms... 2-3 leads from the body wrap up to the helmet, then a couple wraps around the helmet to secure the leads.

 

i'm sure that'd work fine...but I have to say i'm always amazed at how unprofessional some of the professionals can be

 

Give me a break,.....ITS professional duct tape.

Alot of THE Pro`s still do it.

Including around their fire boots/pant legs,..spark plug wires,..wheelie bar,
parachute shround lines,..roof hatch,..fuel pump shut off,..inspection cover on the clutch can,.....

yes Duct Tape is a Professional tool in drag racing,..
and used by the Professionals,...

why is that so un-professional,...besides we are not Professionals

It's not so much "unprofessional" but it's not near as "concrete" as a hold down bracket. When dealing w/ 1k's of dollars why trust something that's only 1.00 dollar? BUT, if everybody had the exact same ideas there'd be no competition

 

dude this is drag racing... let the bitches in LA and NY be label whores and worry about not having the latest 'hip' thing... a small strip of duct tape is perfect! i use it everytime... fail proof, nothing to break, rattle loose, fail... blah blah blah

and fwiw... my hans is carbon fiber but i definitely like your duct tape 'enhancement' idea

If you do it properly, the duct tape method works all the time, every time, zero failures.

Keep it to no more than 3/8" or so wide, one wrap only. The lever won't shake closed or move until the driver squeezes the fuel shutoff at which time it will break the tape.

I have also seen once or twice a car with a spring on the shutoff to pull it over-center when it was open, but I didn't look at it too closely...and a roll of duct tape probably cost a lot more than that spring that could break and possibly get jammed...

I would honestly be scared of using anything more "concrete" than the tried and true duct tape method. The more complicated, the more likely it is to fail at some point in my mind.

We use black duct tape...its easy...reliable..Light weight and it never fails! NEVER NEVER NEVER! Just a good pull on my fuel shut off and its off! No springs to break or parts to malfunction that cost me thousands of dollars cause it decided to lean itself out after 330'

If it works perfect then why try to change it.

Everyone I know uses duct tape and we use it on our car. If you use a spring to hold it open, whats going to hold it CLOSED when you pull/push the fuel shut off lever????

Man I hate to admit it, but I spent a couple of hours making a little bracket to mount a spring on. It works great though you have to hold it closed or do as I did and make a loop out of 550 lb. para cord to hold it closed. I never thought about duct tape, which is funny because nearly everything I fix uses duct tape somewhere.

 

i have a spring pulling the valve open and the spring is just strong enough to keep the valve open and the nice thing about the spring over the duct tape is that if you wanna warm the car up quicker just lean it out a bit on the burn out and if you build the bracket right it will over center the spring and hold it closed as well works awsome

(which btw doubles as a wallet patch kit)

 

It's fairly easy to make an "over center" spring bracket that holds it open, or closed.

 

Correct Me If I'm Wrong Dont Most Racers Call It 200 Mph Tape? Unless Of Course You Run T/f Then Its 300 Mph Tape. How Could We Race Without It.

ken lowe makes an over centre bracket that fits on the fuel shut off.It is on his web site in 2 sizes depending in whick fuel shut off you have.Simple design and workss very well holding the fuel in the on or off position.
