Kevin are you talking coils or the actual mag?

A couple weeks ago at Pomona i asked this question to the MSD guys , after seen some top fuel teams having black mag caps . They tell me MSD don't sell black cap , this is racer choice to paint or put some coating on their mags and caps .

MSD does now sell the black caps. I had to paint my first one then ordered a new black one from MSD.

As far as the black generators, no difference I know of. Other than black is the new blue in the anodizing world.

I cannot remember who it is, but a business will repair/hot rod the Pro Mag 44s and when he does he coats them in black.

I will try and remember to look it up tonight when I get home. I was thinking it was Leahy, but he makes no mention of black mags on his pages.

Right or wrong, someone told me the black was being used because it didn't look like doo doo after a fire. Or the first ones out there were being used like a terrible towel.

BR Motorsports are the one's who anodize their mags in Black. Some have said that's how you know if a mag has been ck'ed by them, but that's not true. I just talked to Bob there at BR yesterday about checking a mag, and he only does the black upon request. I think it cost $120.

They are used to discern between the the black system and the red system on a fuel car so it will help troubleshoot phazing issues and when adjusting the timing . One complete mag, trigger, coil, cap and wires will be in each color on the car normally. They are all intended to be the same but modified to be visually easier to work on .

Eric I remember someone offering a hopped up 44 in black last year too, but I can't for the life of me find who it was. That article was about an attempt to over come the cylinder dropping issue with hotter spark and different timing curves and increased dwell. Maybe it was on Mike Canter's other web site or on Draglist but I just can't find it anywhere!:rolleyes::eek:
