I'm kind of at a crossroads with my car.
I understand the advantages of a 24v starter system but is it warranted for a low compression turbo engine?

    Originally I was going to install a 16 V lithium battery and a 12 V starter.
If I am to install a 24 V starter I would need to install two 12 V batteries in my car or use an external battery pack for the starter. The company that I order all my parts through sent me the 24 V starter and told me that that's what they use on all their cars.

My first inclination is to send the starter back and get a 12 V starter but I thought I would ask here first before I send it back and get some opinions.

The reason a roots blower car uses 24 volts is because with a 12 volt starter it will not spin over fast enough with a crank trigger to start. The roots blower and high compression slows it down mainly the roots blower. Since your turbos don't slow down the motor while cranking you should be like a nitrous car on start so a 16 volt battery should be just fine with a 12 volt starter. 24 volt battery chargers are a little expensive also. For our roots blower car we use an external 24 volt battery pack on the golf cart and it is a real pain in the butt.

I have a twin turbo 529 ci 481X 12 to 1 with a mag and a single 16 volt battery. It works perfect YOU just have to have the mag crank trigger and ECU phased and working together.

How Big of cranking amp 16v batteries are you guys using? I know a few guys with roots blowers using 12v starters that use the big external ford solenoid and put 24 volts to it, they just bypass the solenoid on the starter.

540 KB Olds with Brodix SR-20 heads and 10.5 compression; twin 91 turbochargers on alcohol. On board 12 volt mini starter with two 1000CCA batteries in series (external). Plug battery in, ignition on, hit starter, turn on fuel and by the time oil pressure is at 100 psi, the motor is fired. Unplug and drive away. Not a drag race application--Grand National mini modified pulling "tractor". Burn up a starter very seldom, but I use an inexpensive Hitachi style and if I have to change it, takes me about 5 minutes. Just my own personal experience. JW

Do most of the promods use an external starter battery nowadays?

anytime you start the car at the line or in the pits the golf cart has to be there and plugged in. Then people want to use the golf cart and they unplug the charger and drive off and never put the batteries back on charge when they come back. It does reduce weight out of the car and 24 volts will really spin the motor over

^^I know a couple guys that have a very similar setup. single 16v battery on a 14-71 hemi w/pro mag44. Start on the mag, flip x-over switch to trigger after it starts idling on its own. Works well.

I know a lot of the pro mod teams use a 24v some use 36v (not sure how) that they use a remote plug in deal on the starting line, like mike is stating. There are some real ultra lightweight mobile options out there now. I know of one that weighs under 4lbs.

I drove over to meziere and talked to them. Showed the 24v starter I have that is setup for the McAmis starter location and they had a starter that will work.
The golf cart thing was enough to make me use a 16v system. Lol

    Sent the 24v back.

    Thank you for the opinions.
