I have done some research regarding getting oil to the wrist pins.

Dry sump, full scrapers, sump lower than crank etc etc.

New pistons now have dual pin oilers in pistons.

    Aluminum Rods.

Coated pins is a option, however at 75.00 each I'm sure that my thoughts and I see some aftermarket rod manufactures have notches on the sides for this very thing.

My research reveals that notching a small groove ( A Cosworth Notch) in the upper b/e section of the con-rods should work.

Has any body tried this and where would be best position: i.e. 1 notch as a small vee at the 12 o'clock so it sprays up the rod so to speak, or 2 notches say at the 10 and 2 o'clock position.

I presume as 2 rods share the same crank pin it would be best to fit these at the side of rods at the crank radius rather than where the 2 rods are next to each other?

Do you think that current pin lube is inadequate?

Very, motor has 12 passes with rpm 8500 - everything else is perfect except pins, piston bosses and intake side of skirts.

Pins have grooved slightly and 2 to 3 of these every time I run the engine are starting to seize on pistions.

Skirts on intake side at bottom look like no oil at all and marking.

My thought also is to convert my 4 stge oil pump to a single as one stage at present is being used as vacuum hooked up to the cylinder heads to evacuate.

How much vacuum are you pulling? What weight oil?

What's the piston to wall. Coated or in coated pitons?

    tol:dont know what vacuum.
mostly 50wt have used 70 on occassions.
    Both banks

Jay: will get back to you on clearance, pistons are not coated.

Spray bar is now under construction.

Jig is also now made to hold rods in my mill to put very shallow slots (AKA Cosworth Grooves) at b/e parallel to rod beam - I really believe this will work so proceding ahead with it - the factory years ago wern't wrong when they did this to rods to get oil to the pin and up into the bore.

Years ago I bought and successfully ran a set of cunningham steel con rods - i ran a hacksaw oil groove slot in rods at cap part line - grooved with die grinder around edge of bolt hole, filed vee in the upper bearing at crush point - this shot oil to opposing cyl.

If this is a hemi ? What is your rod side clearance ? Oil pressure at max RPM ?

Is piston wall and piston pin lube typically a problem these days in blown alcohol, or is there perhaps an issue here that is being overlooked? I don't seem to recall such issues being problematic in current times?

I read recently pro stock suffered this very problem - coated pins I believe doubled the life of the pistons. I want to overcome the issue and not put a band aid in there.

Viewed a USA built and prepped BBC motor out of a boat 2 nights ago, sump is very deep - inside the sump is a very simple spray bar system. The more I look into this the more I'm hearing dry sumped motors have a pin oiling issue if nothing done.

Do you happen to have a picture of the spray bar system?

I have had pistons made that take oil from the oil ring lands and force them into the wrist pin lands. Solves the oil problem where the wrist pin and buttons all interact with the piston. Food for thought

    Two questions......

Do people ever EDM a small passage through the rod beam from the big end of the rod to the small end of the rod, to pressure feed oil to the pin, like is sometimes done in endurance motors?

What about piston squirters, like what the NASCAR guys do?

youngtuner: my new pistons have arrived I had to stipulate i wanted oil hole to pin boss - je advised they dont need them, i insisted - they did it - pin is in oil groove. current pins appear like they just come off the lathe with little tiny grooves - keep putting in my lathe and diamond file on them.

plus they quite sharp where they meet the buttons

a previous set from wiesco was all done as std - i see je and wiesco are now one.

tol: yes a usa firm does drill them for approx 50.00 per rod.

no they dont turn blue - just dry looking like no oil same as intake side of skirt

rod is great. talked to firm that ordered pistions, and researched this. pins likely flexing / bending - 1.094 as supplied with original pistons - for a n/a application - now I have trend H 13
