    Heel to the Steel

I am so amazed every time I read all these awesome wishes of good will and God's Blessings for our fellow racer and all around good guy Shawn. I know that I am not alone in thanking Nik, Taylor, Bill, Jason, and Bambee in keeping us all informed and knowing how much we all truly "Give a Damn". This is a testament to how true love and caring for our fellow men and women, who go through life the best they can, makes a huge difference not only in the healing process for Shawn, and comfort for his family and loved ones, but it also makes a huge difference in all of us who get down on ourselves for not hitting the 100% mark in our daily lives. Faith in our friends and in oursleves is Gods biggest gift to everyone. I am so fortunate and proud to be in the midst of such incredible, caring people! God Bless and good luck today Shawn, and remember, no matter how slow or fast the pace, keep your Heel To The Steel !!!!!

    Shawn update...

Update for Wednesday's surgery, they did not operate on Shawn. They said his breathing was a little too "heavy" or labored and did not want to put him under at that point. They are certainly watching out for him. He did get a CAT scan though, the results I do not know at this time.

So for now it is looking like they will do his final work next week. Not the news we had hoped for but it will give him time to read all your fantastic replies of support and such.

It is one small bump in the long road (race) to recovery.

Will keep you posted as I hear more.

    Bill

Thank you for the update! Not the update we were hoping for, but he's blessed to have doctors that are taking such good care of him and are making decisions for his very best, safest outcome. Being strong and safe for the surgery is really important, and we'll keep praying for him to get stronger and feel better for the surgery next week. Thinking of Shawn and his family and friends a lot and sending virtual hugs...

    A chance meeting . . . .

Was talking with one of my friends from Dallas a bit ago, he was telling me about his recent trip to Memphis and his visit to Graceland. Said as they were about to leave, saw a race hauler rig parked there and they were unloading a Harley Davidson. Said he visited with the guys from the hauler and they told him they were from Canada and raced Top Alcohol. Said they were coming from Vegas to Charlotte and were going to ride the rest of the way. My friend told me how nice they were, and how they visited for a good while with these really great folks. You can imagine my friend's shock when I asked him the racer' name . . . . . . .

Praying for a quick and full recovery.

    Take care, K

Shawn update... and so far good.

It is 3:00 PM on the coast and Ron just told me they have been working on Shawn for 4 plus hours and have another couple to go. So far things are going well. If it keeps up like this we MAY be looking at Shawn going home as soon as Friday (best case).

You know , I just re-read all the posts to this thread and I am not ashamed to say that as I write this I have a tear or two. All of your support has meant so much to everyone and I know there are many others out there who did not write but have been in support just the same. We all are so thankful, it really has helped.

Will update as I hear more.

Bill this is great news and answered prayer. My family and I have not ceased to pray for Shawn, Ron, Marianne, Taylor, Nik and the rest of the clan since we heard of this. I am anxiously waiting for the day I get to tech Shawn for his return to the seat. God speed through the recovery and return to the track.

    Great News

    Bill,

That is great news. Please tell Shawn, and the entire family, that they are still, and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Hoping Shawn gets to come home soon, and the recovery is as smooth as a mid to high .20, at over 270..... ;)

    Great news...

Shawn will be coming home Friday! Finally he gets back and starts the recovery process. Do not have any details as yet for when he arrives or where but I know he is going to need some rest after the trip home. When his strength starts to build we will inquire about visiting and pass along room info.

The racing community has shown what the human spirit can be and do, and it is awesome! Thanks again to all.

    headin' to Canada, eh?

    That's great news Bill!
I'll may be flying out to the coast in May at some point, so pass along some contact info so that if I do, I can stop over & visit.
Not sure if our card has / will arrive b4 ya leave, maybe they'll forward it if not.
Ron: I'm guessing you chewed up a pile of little cigars during this ordeal...don't blame ya...I can't imagine what you all went through with all the early unknown scenarios.
But, good things happan to good people, and the Big Guy has all of you high on the good list.
Bill, thanks again for the continued updates along the way; the positive progress makes everyone's days go by better.
Shawn: Looking forward to seeing you back in the drivers seat soon, and when we do get to line up against each other, and you kick my ass with one of your supersonic runs, i'll be okay w/ it...the first time...lol

    Visitors for Shawn...

Shawn is at a local hospital in the lower mainland and is ready for visitors! But we do ask that if you are interested in stopping by, please private message me or Taylor. We will give you her phone number to contact first...being that he still has good and bad days and there is a limit on how many people he can have in his room, knowing ahead of time if someone is coming would be awesome!
He is doing well and the hospital seems to have a handle on his meds now, although at times he is a little "sleepy". He looks better each day and I know he has enjoyed hearing and reading all your wishes. Thanks so much and we will keep you posted.

    Good News

    Bill,
It is so good to read your progress reports. Everytime I get on the internet, for the last month, I have to check for any updates. Shawn's accident, and all the prayers & support, have reminded me how lucky I am to be a part of the racing community.
Tell Shawn we all said "Hi and continue to get well".

    God Bless,
    Marty Thacker & Crew

Got a chance to see Shawn yesterday. He looks good, it is amazing. Was very humerous, joking with me and his dad. He is healing well, and the nurses are taking good care of him. I have more updates at SpeedZone.
It was so good to see him.

There is no time line yet. He is not really in a wheelchair yet. He is close, but he can't be in an upright position yet. He has rods or a brace in his hip an can only sit for a short period of time. Once it is removed they will be more active in the therapy. He was just moved to the orthopedic ward from critical care, so therapy will become intensive. His right leg is still imobilized. It will be a while before any time frames on wheechair, crutches, walker etc

    Shawn's Journey...

Just thought you all might want to hear how things have been going with Shawn. He had his pins removed from the pelvic bone and some from the right ankle/foot. He still has a lot of hardware in him but this is a big step forward and allows a little more movement. He only takes oral pain medication now and he is trying to extend the time between meds as pain allows. Each day they try to move him out of the bed and into a chair where he sits up (60 degrees). This puts some muscles into use and helps get the blood moving around too. He did get another skin graft on his wound on the left leg and that appears to be doing well. The right foot is still a little "weepy" and they have him on antibiotics for infections as well as Hyd. Peroxide cleansing of the wound on his right calf.
Each day the physio team tries a little more movement and Shawn is staying positive and keeping in good spirits. Shirleen and I try to get up to see him every couple of days and his Dad and Mom visit everyday. Taylor (fiancee) has been an Angel and is with Shawn probably 12 hours everyday. He has had a lot of visitors and it sure helps pass the time and keeps him going.

I want to thank everyone again for all the kind words and thoughts that made the dark days a little brighter. The drag racing community is an awesome group and we are seeing that first hand.

Will post more down the way as things progress.
