    vhodoopete@gmail.com

Not to many guys here in Australia carry on board batteries and starters on blown stuff but I want to

    Cheers Pete

Do you have to run solinoids,..??
I have a 12v onboard battery in my flopper so I can self start w/ a mag kill.
I will be pumping up the ignition lead so I need the better cranking, BBC 50 degrees lead 5.2 amp mag.
I will be removing the onboard 12v batt, and will make two 12v batts in series for the 24v result to run on the tailgate of truck ,with a quick connect batt connection to plug into on the car when I go t to fire up.
I run a 14g wire from the 2g battery wire (big lug) of the starter to a starter button within arms reach, that runs threw the safety nuetral switch of the shifter and back to the start side of the starter,..Question is with the 24v and more amperage, will I need a thicker wire (10g)that runs from the starter to my start switch and back to the starter..???

    Thanks In Advance.

    24V Starter Wiring

    Hello Bic,
I only use the solenoids because I want to be able to charge both batteries at the same time with a single 12 charger. Since all of my electronics and electric gadgets are 12 volts, my car had the tendancy to run a single small battery down quicker than I liked. The solenoids let my electric items run on both batteries. You can certainly wire two batteries in series and have 24 volts to the starter, just not able to run all the electric items on both batteries at the same time unless you have two seperate 12 volt systems in the car. You would still have to have two chargers or move the charger from one battery to the other. I still use a 24V jump box connected to a quick disconnect when I plan on cranking on it for an extended time, like building oil pressure, etc. The size of the wire to the switch could stay the same size.
Two $38 solenoids is all it cost me to make this work. Still looks to me to be a better option than the $600 unit I see sold elsewhere. I still use a 12V starter. It is a Severe Duty from Tilton. All this said is from my experiences with my car. I am sure others have different opinions and experiences. More than one way to skin a cat, as they say.
    Thanks In Advance.

I want to do the same thing as you Vic. I'm going to do the 24v start setup on my car but with the batteries in a cart and quick connects to the onboard starter. The 2 solinoid deal would be a bonus for me also so I can still charge with a 12v charger. Do you just put a jumper wire from the + starter lug to the starter solinoid all on the starter? What would you guys reconmend for 12v batteries to use with my setup? As for the neutral saftey swicth that might be a problem if you put 24v through it??

Mac, you are correct about the neutral safety switch. First time I did the plug in thing or I should say the second time I tried it = no go. Spent a while stumped before I remembered that thing was in the circuit. It no likey more than 12v.

So insted of pulling the start button wire from the batt cable at starter (24V) to supply the starter button power to the start solinoid,..I could just grab 12v from the small 12v onboard batt that will supply power to the trans brake and shift/tach also....this is a BBC.

    YES...???

    24 volts

All you need to do is come off the first battery. It gives you 12 volts to run your stuff. If it is wrong been doing it wrong for years .and it is still wrong. But never had a problem. Keep it simple. Don

24v (2 batts) will be on the pit truck,..
small single 12v (motorcycle type) Battery will be on board for powering up the trans brake tach/shift light,..grab my 12v power for start button from the small onboard batt.

    Yes...???

That's what I was thinking but will there be any issue hitting the starter with 24volts and only putting 12 volts to the starter solinoid that is on the starter?
I was also thinking of ditching the onboard start button and neutral safety switch so the crew would be in full control just like a blower mount starter.

has any one looked into or used a series-parallel switch? it gives you the 24 volt start and has a 12 v circut similar to csr's magic box but just alot cheaper. would like to hear any thoughts or if any one has used one? they were used on big truck's all the time, Wilson makes one for around $100.

I think you would be making a big mistake if you use the solenoid on the starter. You should have an external solenoid for your starter. If it is a CSR you will have no problem with 24volts. We ran ours for a long time with 36volts and had no problems.
