Team YNOT with another Solid Showing

Rusk, Texas - YNOT Racing’s Owner/Driver Jim Whiteley and Crew Chief Norm Grimes, went into the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division Four stop held at the Cherokee Motorsports Park outside the city of Rusk, Texas, looking to follow up on their first win of the season, That win came two weeks ago at the Division Seven Race in Fontana, California.

This event which is held at a lower elevation which brings out the full compliment of the A/Fuel Cars in Top Alcohol Dragster class. A total of twelve cars showed up in Rusk with ten of them being of the “Junior Fuel” persuasion. With only eight cars qualifying for final eliminations on Sunday, the pressure was on Team YNOT to get into the show solidly. “We knew it was going to be tough” stated Whiteley. Team YNOT came out in the first session on Friday, ran a very respectable 5.52 at 258.17 mph which bought them the number three position. On Saturday things got better. Norm Grimes now with a base line, got after the tune up and was able to produce a very stout 5.44, at 264.03 miles per hour. This stood as number one until Spenser Massey was able to sneak in with a very nice 5.39 and take back the number one position, leaving Whiteley in the number two position in the final qualifying order.

Sunday’s eliminations began with Grimes once again working his magic on the tune up and the new Chip Neilson built car responding with a 5.42 second run in defeating Brandon Lewis in his A/Fueler in round one. Everything was looking good going into the second round, where Team YNOT would face another A/Fueler, this one driven by James Thompson. At the green Whiteley gained an advantage and was pulling away, when the air system that controls the shifting of the three speed transmission developed a glitch and the anomaly prevented Whiteley from changing gears, thus ending the day for Team YNOT.

Both Whiteley and Grimes were able to see the silver lining in the weekend. “The car is coming along nicely, but I’m never totally satisfied, that is what makes me work harder to make the car faster. This car and the team is real privilege to work on.” stated Grimes. Whiteley echoed the comments of Grimes. “I love this new car, not that our old car was a piece of crap, but this one I’m more vertical and have better sight ,it handles so much better and Norm has it flying!”

The next event for Team YNOT will be the O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals, at Heartland Park outside of Topeka, Kansas, June 1-3rd. This race will be somewhat of a home coming for Jim who was born and raised in Liberal, Kansas.

Team YNOT would like to thank NGK Spark Plugs, Permatex, Impact Race Products, Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, Rapture Industries, and J&A Services for their support in partnering with YNOT.
