O.K. So I will be buying a new crank soon and I know Bryant is great and the most common I see, Winberg is also a good crank and some say it is even stronger, Now I am told Velasco is even stronger yet.

Can anyone share there first hand experience on this matter with me.

I do have a Bryant and Winberg here but have never compared the two.

    Thanks,

My luck with Bryant was it wasn't a very hard crank. Seemed to get out of round easy or show excessive wear marks quickly. I've had 2 winberg and 1 Bryant . Winberg seemed to be machined much nicier. And yes they all crack over time.

    Winberg

Talking with a noted crank guy who fixes a lot of the fuel cranks, he told me most of the ones that are repairable are Winberg.

Winberg also offers a new "top fuel" heat treat. I haven't tried it yet but will.

    Regarding crank repair.

What can be repaired on these cranks? Can the small cracks in the filet be repaired on TF cranks ? How is it done? I am asking because i have access to many TF cranks that have been taken out of rotation. We just don't have any one over here in europe that does this. When the TF cranks starts to show these signs they are retired. Maybe it would feasible to ship over a couple of pallets of these and have them repaired?

I asked Bob Ottow (Automan) the same question.

His answer was: He's used all 3 cranks but believes the superior product is Velasco. The A/fuel cars that he has tuned to world records in the class all run Velasco cranks.

    question

Mike at Rage also highly recommended Velasco but said that is probably because they go way back.

This topic brings up another interesting question. Are a/fuel cars harder on cranks than blower cars or vice versa?

I know A/Fuel is less Rpm and no blower harmonics but we all know how volatile Nitro can be.

    Thanks,

    Crank support

    Hi,

In a BBC it is pretty much a necessity, I suspect it is because of the weaker snout. On the hemi it is not needed nor have I ever seen one on a hemi. The support gear drives are the closest I have seen.

    Hope that helps,

I thought the hemi mains were 2.750, same as chevy?

    What makes the snout stronger?

Our BBCs have the hemi 3/4 NF bolt

Is there a location that the hemi usually develop cracks?

On our chevys its in the front rod journal, sometimes between #1 rod and #1 main and sometimes between 2 and 2.

    Cranks

    Hi Sodak,

The main journals are the same between the two but if I recall correctly the snout is smaller on the chevy, it may be longer as well. Tomorrow I can dig out my Bryant BBC crank and Winberg hemi crank to do some comparison. I do recall when I ran the Chevy that it was to always run a crank support. This may have been addressed since I had a Chevy (nearly 10 years ago or more) at least in the high $$$ aftermarket cranks.

I'll try to do some measuring tomorrow for giggles.
