I have developed a crank triggered electronic points box for use with the Mallory Sprint and Super Mags. The unit can also be used with a Vertex.
A rev limiter is in the works.
Spark retard is also possible with this unit

I am looking for feedback or interest in the unit

    Thanks, Bill

I've got a bunch of Mallory and Vertex mag customers that would jump at it if it were reliable and priced right.

Let me know if I can get one from you to test on the machine!

    Thanks,
    Spud

Will they be cheaper than the PSI rev limiter ?

Where were you a month ago, when I specifically sold my Super Mag 3 due to lack of a rev limiter?

    /sigh...

I'd buy at least enough for 3 motors if they're reliable and correctly priced.

I'd be looking for the timing stability.

Unit is still being tested, requires msd or other flying magnet crank trigger and msd pn 8980 timing computer. Still working on revlimiter. If the rev limit is just for an over-rev cutoff not a launch limiter a msd rpm switch can be used. The msd timing computer is very low cost and lets you use their chips for retard or a sixshooter etc.
Only modification to your mag is to remove the points and capacitor
The electronic box uses three 9volt lithium batteries made by Ultralife. They are avalable for about $6.00 each in packs of 6. The batteries will last for at least 45min of running time.
Each box will be made for a specific Mag SMIII SMIV SMV etc. If you switch to a different Mag the box can be altered to fit at a small cost.
The box really improves the SMV's spark rise time and starting.

Thanks for the interest, pictures to come

    Bill;

While you're in the development phase of this, why not include a 9V linear regulator in the design? The FETs for such are dirt cheap and beat the snot out of having to wonder "Hmm, do I have a fresh battery installed?".

This sounds like just the bees knees, especially if you can incorporate the regulator! Less maintenance has got to be a good thing. I asked MSD if I could adapt my Vertex to use one of their electronic points boxes with rev limiter and I haven't received a reply yet.

Still working on unit Rev limiter may have to wait, but MSD rpm switch works fine as an emergency over-rev kill.

Sorry for the delays, Had to earn a living. Back working on the box now. Testing has resulted in no issues but I still haven't incorporated a rev limiter. I will try the ETC unit asap but the basic points box is ready.

Just curious but is there an update? Are thing much closer to completion or have we been side tracked? Whats happening with the rev limiter?

    Will the tach work?
What I'm asking is, could the yellow wire of the MSD timing computer be used to run an electronic tach? If so, could a MSD 8728 soft touch rev control be incorporated for a rev limiter?

We would be interested. We want to stay with the vertex for the old school look but a rev limit of any kind would sure be nice. Driver tends to have a heavy foot on burnouts.
