Callaway jumps back in the mix with Rusk runner-up

RUSK, Texas - Former NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway jumped back in the points battle with a runner-up finish at this past weekend's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Cherokee County Motorsports Park in Rusk, Texas. Callaway qualified third and reached the finals using the same consistency that won him the Division 4 Championship in 2002.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, qualified his Tom Conway and Stacy McLemore tuned dragster third in the field with a 5.611 at 254.57 mph. In round one, Callaway took out current Division 4 points leader Gene Snow for the second time this year with a 5.612 at 256.31 mph, and then defeated Karl Brounkowski with a 5.584 at 256.16 mph in the semifinals. In the final, Callaway took a large holeshot on Steve Torrence, but slowed to a 5.841 at 229.20 mph to Torrence's 5.511 at 256.94 mph.

"We're pretty happy with the weekend," said Callaway. "As much as we have fought this car for the past two seasons, it's finally starting to come around. We've changed everything in the clutch department, and we finally have the clutch acting right. It still needs some fine tuning, but it is running consistent again. Now we have something to go do battle with. It's a good thing because summer is here; its time for us to make up some ground with our blown car."

With one final round appearance to their credit now, Callaway and his team will try to put together another run reminiscent of their three back-to-back wins in the summer of 2002 that was a springboard to the Championship. With the next Division 4 race not scheduled until September, the team has their sights set on the upcoming Division 2 event in Montgomery, Ala., July 15-17.

"Montgomery is a day race in the middle of July," explained Callaway. "It ought to be miserably hot, and we just can't wait. Now that we're starting to get a handle on this car, she's showing signs of her old self, when she would run down a dirt road. We'll show them boys back east a little heat with some of our Tejano Salsa. We're looking forward to it."
