Taylor Terrific in Division 7 Opener

ANAHEIM, CA — Arizona’s Firebird International Raceway played host to the 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil Series Pacific Division opener. Dennis Taylor used last Thursday to test some new developments from his Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez. As a result the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car responded to its mechanical massaging, running a convincing early shut-off pass and another at 5.70-seconds, which stood for quick time of the day. By the end of Friday’s initial qualifying session, Taylor was third on the roster with a fine 5.73-second pass at 246.30 miles per hour. The 60-foot time, which is used as an important tuning guide, was an impressive .945 seconds.

Racers awoke to frustration, as rain and windy conditions had settled over the area through the night. Track drying commenced early Saturday morning, but by 10:30 MST a major rain cell halted the action at the onset of Stock Eliminator qualifying. By 1:00 pm the sun had broken through and the staging lanes were full, with the new schedule calling for Stock, Super Stock, Top Comp, and Super Street, followed by the Top Alcohol cars. Just before 5:00 pm, heavy rain and lightning threatened to wipe out the remaining qualifying runs, and did so by 5:30.

For Sunday’s Eliminations, the eight-car field was determined using Friday’s lone qualifying session. The first round match-up saw Taylor and the Plumbing Concepts Camaro thundering to the finish line running 5.714 seconds at 244.92 mph, as Sean Bellemeur had traction problems. In the second go, Dennis lost lane choice to Kirk Kuhns by a mere .003, but powered to the win as his opponent was late off the line. Steve Gasparrelli advanced to meet Taylor in the final round. After performing their between-rounds maintenance like clockwork, Dennis rallied his team and thanked them all for rising to the occasion.

Though Dennis Taylor was in the final round for the second year in a row, the pressure was on, as Gasparrelli was the only car to run quicker than 5.70-seconds during the event. With a slight starting line advantage and quicker numbers at each incremental timer throughout the quarter-mile, Dennis Taylor put the Plumbing Concepts Camaro Funny Car in the winner’s circle, running 5.717 at 247.07 mph to a losing 5.74. The final round was a true Clash of the Titans, as both drivers are highly respected from coast to coast. Taylor was consistent at the starting line all day and saved his best reaction time for the final.

    Reaction Times — .071, .070, .062 — Elapsed Times — 5.714, 5.803, 5.717
